Unlock Your Health: Essential Books and Resources for Diabetes Management

Unlock Your Health: Essential Books and Resources for Diabetes Management

A Note of Caution: While this guide offers valuable resources, it's crucial not to rely on it as your sole source of information. Always consult with healthcare professionals and get informed by the experts! Becoming an educated patient takes effort, but your health and quality of life are absolutely worth it.

Here are some highly recommended books to help you on your journey:

Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution by Dr. Richard K. Bernstein

If you take only one piece of advice from this post, let it be this: get this book! It's available in audio, Kindle, and print formats.

In my opinion, this is one of the best books ever written on living with Type 2 Diabetes. Dr. Bernstein provides comprehensive insights into medications, lab tests, and strongly advocates for a low-carbohydrate, high-protein diet. He also offers invaluable guidance on navigating the current medical system and includes a crucial chapter on managing hospital stays and self-care during illnesses like influenza or stomach flu, which have special considerations for diabetics. Dr. Bernstein, now in his late 80s, continues to maintain his practice and hosts a monthly podcast.

You can find this essential resource on Amazon and other bookstores.

The Diabetes Code by Dr. Jason Fung

(The following is a direct excerpt from the Amazon page for this book.)

I've personally found intermittent fasting to be incredibly helpful, and Dr. Fung's clear explanation of how and why it works is simply perfect. Just a note: intentional fasting during a predetermined time window is not starving yourself. Once you get past the initial 12-14 hours (easily achieved by having an early dinner and skipping breakfast the next day), the hunger challenges often subside, and for me, the rest becomes much easier. Read the book and discover it for yourself!

FROM NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLING AUTHOR DR. JASON FUNG • “The doctor who invented intermittent fasting.” —The Daily Mail

“Dr. Fung reveals how [type 2 diabetes] can be prevented and also reversed using natural dietary methods instead of medications … This is an important and timely book. Highly recommended.” —Dr. Mark Hyman, author of The Pegan Diet

“Dr. Jason Fung has done it again. … Get this book!” —Dr. Steven R. Gundry, author of The Plant Paradox

Everything you believe about treating type 2 diabetes is wrong. Today, most doctors, dietitians, and even diabetes specialists consider type 2 diabetes to be a chronic and progressive disease—a life sentence with no possibility of parole. But the truth, as Dr. Fung reveals in this groundbreaking book, is that type 2 diabetes is reversible.

Writing with clear, persuasive language, Dr. Fung explains why conventional treatments that rely on insulin or other blood-glucose-lowering drugs can actually exacerbate the problem, leading to significant weight gain and even heart disease. The only way to treat type 2 diabetes effectively, he argues, is proper dieting and intermittent fasting—not medication.

“The Diabetes Code is unabashedly provocative yet practical ... a clear blueprint for everyone to take control of their blood sugar, their health, and their lives.”—Dr. Will Cole, author of Intuitive Fasting

Natural Supplements for Diabetes: Practical and Proven Health Suggestions for Types 1 and 2 Diabetes By Dr. Frank Murray

This book, along with sound advice from a Naturopathic Doctor, provides an excellent foundation on the various nutrients and supplements that can benefit individuals with Type 2 Diabetes. While the publishing date is 2007, and newer ideas have emerged since then (which I'll touch on later), it remains a valuable resource. It's available from Amazon in all formats.

Outlive, The Science and Art of Longevity by Dr. Peter Attia

Rethinking Medicine to Live Better Longer… This groundbreaking manifesto on living better and longer challenges conventional medical thinking on aging and reveals a new approach to preventing chronic disease and extending long-term health, from a visionary physician and leading longevity expert.

Dr. Attia introduces the concept of Medicine 3.0, which focuses on prevention and wellness, and how to maximize the benefits for longevity and better health when working within our current standard allopathic medical model.

Eat for Energy by Ari Whitten

In this book, Ari covers diet and supplement strategies designed to energize your body’s mitochondria, which can help drive more efficient glucose regulation. We'll delve deeper into mitochondrial function and Type 2 Diabetes in a future discussion.

Local County or State Resources

Most local governments will have some form of a Diabetes Council. These organizations often provide community resource booklets or websites offering mainstream treatment and counseling options for individuals with diabetes. Underserved populations, in particular, may greatly benefit from resources like these. For example, my local Southern Nevada resource booklet is available through Smallpdf and their website is https://diabetesnv.org/.
